✦For university technology transfer offices
Connect early exploration with your institution’s commercialization support. A proposed pilot could help researchers organize source evidence, application questions and approved nonconfidential summaries before a technology transfer conversation. The institution decides how disclosures, intellectual property and commercialization review are handled.
✦For accelerators and incubators
Help builders turn an interesting possibility into a testable problem. An agreed cohort activity could combine research discovery with customer questions, mentor feedback and practical next milestones. Measure what participants learn and revise before treating an idea as ready for a venture.
✦For corporate innovation teams and venture capital firms
Contribute domain feedback, explain adoption needs or support a defined cohort or showcase. Participants choose what approved work to share. Partner participation, mentoring and referrals require agreement; R3ciprocity does not supply vetted investment opportunities, arrange investment or promise a financial return.
✦Start with research and a concrete problem
Compare abstracts, discover unfamiliar papers, save useful sources when signed in and develop a project. Bring an outside method back to a problem you care about. Write down who may benefit, what evidence supports the need and which assumption you need to test next.
✦An illustrative path from a paper to a next experiment
Imagine a researcher finding a method from another field that might improve a lab workflow. They collect the source evidence, ask likely users about the problem through their institution and revise the idea after feedback. A technology transfer office or accelerator could then help consider further validation, a licensing conversation, a venture pathway or more research. This is a planning example, not a R3ciprocity success story.
✦Customer discovery is a practice to organize, not an outcome to assume
NSF describes I-Corps as experiential learning that uses customer discovery to assess an invention’s market potential. It is an example of established commercialization practice. A R3ciprocity pilot would need its own delivery plan; no I-Corps affiliation, admission or funding eligibility is implied.
✦Agree on the pilot before inviting participants
Define the cohort, learning goals, mentoring responsibilities, budget, sharing permissions and evaluation. Organized customer conversations, technology transfer referrals and participating industry mentors are proposed collaboration activities. They are not automatic features of the platform.
✦Measure useful progress
Track participation, organized evidence, tested assumptions, useful revisions, completed milestones and voluntary referrals. Report actual costs separately from educational outcomes or any later income. A decision to do more research, or to stop a weak commercial idea, can be a useful result.
